Journal of Migraine Sufferers

Jana-Just to let you know that I'm thinking of you and hoping that your migraine is over real soon. I've been lucky so far this week, but its only Tuesday night. I hope I can go through the week without a major headache, but its that time of month(period due in about 5 days)and I had trouble sleeping the other night, so I'm real tired. Just wanted you to know you are being prayed for.

Mary Jo: Thanks for posting the article on Dr. Blume. I can't believe anyone would try to hurt him in anyway!! It is because of his diagnosis capibilities & knowledge along with his surgical skills & his work for chronic migraine, cervicogenic, & taxonomical headache sufferers, that he deserves a medal, not investigation. For the severe migraines & headheaches that he has been able to help me with & my severe back problems, I owe him my life, along with at least half a dozen others I know. As for the cocaine flakes, he did try to alleviate a migraine I had in the hospital a day or so after my 1st neck surgery due to the other ruptured disks in my neck that he repaired on my 2nd surgery. I don't know why they're hollering about it because, all it did was open the back of my throat but no pain relief! It was not the type or grade that evidently is sold illegally. It was carried by the hospital pharmacy. It sounds like to me another case like the DEA went after regarding another "Champion for Chronic Intractable pain sufferers, Dr. William Hurwitz who has been cleared, also. It really upsets me to know that anyone would try to do any harm to Dr. Blume!!! Please send me a copy of that article if you have it. Again, thanks for the posting.

Thank you MARY JO for sending out the information on Dr. Blume. Although he did't prescribe medication for me, I am just one of about 5 people I know who has gone to him and I can tell anyone, that he keeps usually good records and sends you so some much documentation that you hardly know what to do with it all. It is so sad that someone who has helped so many have to go through this. He is one of the few doctors who understand intractable chronic pain and it is such ashame that he has to be put through this. Thank you for letting us know about it.

Just a question for any of you all; How do you receive appropriate medical care for migraines without health insurance? My fiancee is currently suffering through her 7th day of a migraine, and doesn't know where to turn. She was 'gifted' with migraines (along with a permanent and debilitating leg injury) 2 years ago through an auto accident, and currently does not have health insurance (the insurance settlement--minimal coverage, of course--knocked her out of Medicade) The SSI disability folks denied her coverage because her doc said the migraines were 'controllable (meaning able to be controlled; although he has had no effect so far). So where can she go and what treatment should she hope to receive? Steve

I have noticed that whenever there's a weather change, a front moving in, I get a violent headache. Does anyone else? Are headaches and weather somehow connected? Louisa

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is having a pain free day. I just wanted to know if anyone out there has ever been on 'Narcotic Drug Therapy'? I just went to my doctor (A physical medicine Dr. may I add) and he has put me on a program that consists of me taking 1/2 tablet of vicodin every 4 hrs. I know you are all thinking that I will become addicted to this med, but think about it. The only things that you can become addicted to is things that you feel the affects of. Like coffee, cigs, alcohol.... Taking 1/2 a tablet of Vicodin is like taking a aspirin. You don't feel nothing. What it is doing for me is it keeps away my headaches. It's like preventive maintenace. It keeps them away so I never have to wake up with a full blown headache. I use to have to take 2-4 vicodins to get rid of my headaches and then be wiped out for the entire day. Now I never have anymore headaches and I can function with no problems. I feel great! I get deep, sound sleep and I am energetic. The only draw back is I may get tolerent to the dosage. I guess at the time I will have to re-evaluate this a bit, but for now, it working! What a relief to find a Dr. that is willing to help. Take care everyone and good luck to all of you!

FYI----this may be bad news to some of you fellow migraine sufferers. In the 10/22 Des Moines Register, Dr. Horst Blume ,72, Sioux City,IA, was charged by the State Board of Medical Examiners with inappropriately prescribing controlled substances to several chronic pain patients. "Board documents say Blume prescribed exorbitant amounts of pain relievers, including barbiturates and cocaine, to numerous patients for years at a time. He also treated migraine patients with cocaine flakes, documents say. The board also charged Blume with failing to prepare treatment plans or obtain proper consultation for patients. Blume already had served a probation for a 1990 board action charging him with misuse of prescriptions and poor record keeping." The article did not say what, if any, actions would be taken against him. I hate to hear this especially if he has helped some of you. I wish the best for you.
